4G, or not 4G

Last week, Samsung revealed that it has developed the next generation of mobile communication standards, creating the technology that may well be the core of 5G technology.

Already?! I can barely keep up; I haven’t even got my hands on a 4G handset yet. Having said that, I don’t really know many people who have.

Although this may be the case, 4G is starting to become a buzzword, largely thanks to Kevin Bacon, whose “4G on EE” adverts started off as being mildly refreshing, but have now become bloody irritating. In fact, I’d go as far as saying that they are one of the reasons why I won’t be turning my back on O2 and converting to EE when my contract runs out in a month’s time.

Loyal as I may be, I cannot deny that EE has done a great job in establishing itself as the UK leader in 4G, so much so in fact that one of my friends recently mentioned that he thought that 4G was completely synonymous with EE. That is a fair assumption really, considering the fact that EE is still currently the only operator in the UK that offers 4G contracts.

However, with a price-tag starting at around £41 per month for a 4G contract and handset with EE, it is unsurprising that not many people have tried and tested 4G, or know many people that have.

Expensive? Clearly! Is it worth spending the money on yet? That depends…
